Perl-AdWords Crisis Foreseen, Averted
By
Doug Caverly
It looks like the Perl community suffered a close call at the hands of a certain search giant. Although allowances have now been made, John Napiorkowski stated early yesterday, "on April 22nd SIGNIFICANT FUNCTIONALITY WILL PERMANENTLY BREAK FOR EVERY PERL APPLICATION USING GOOGLE ADWORDS API."
An update to the AdWords API was the source of all this excitement. Napiorkowski didn't misconstrue the effect of the update, either, considering that one of a Google representative's initial responses was to suggest that Perl users align their applications with other languages.
Fortunately for the Perl community, Google just came up with a more acceptable solution before too much time passed.
Eric Koleda, a member of the AdWords API team, wrote on the AdWords API Forum, "To help you get started using and updating the client library, we've made sure that the current code is up to date with most of the services from v200909 of the API. . . . The only services that are missing from this build are InfoService, BulkMutateJobService, and TargetingIdeaService."
So Perl professionals can rest easy that Google hasn't turned its back on them. It might even be possible to interpret this incident as a positive thing, since the company changed its plans to accommodate Perl.
