Demand For Perl Programmers On The Rise
By
Doug Caverly
Relative to several other programming languages, Perl just might be growing more important. An analysis of hiring trends has determined that there's starting to be a greater demand for Perl experts in the workplace.
Indeed.com is a fairly well-regarded job search site. A lot of companies use it (or at least, Indeed seems able to find openings at a lot of places), meaning that Indeed-derived data is almost sure to be statistically significant.
Perl experts should be happy, then, as Matt Asay found that Perl-related jobs now outnumber Java-related jobs on the site. Also, .Net seems to be experiencing a decline in popularity that has put Perl within striking distance of it.
Of course, it's impossible to ignore the fact that Python and PHP are still very much in the lead on Indeed (Python's number one and PHP's number two, if you couldn't guess). And the distance between them and Perl is increasing on a regular basis, so we're not looking at any sort of versus-everyone victory for Perl.
Still, it's good to see that Perl isn't dropping off everyone's radar. It looks like there will continue to be job opportunities for Perl experts for the foreseeable future.
