TIOBE Index Puts Pearl In Eighth Place

The TIOBE Programming Community index for January 2009 has been released, and Perl fans should find the news to be mostly good. Perl remains among the top 10 programming languages, and its status "A" makes Perl officially part of the mainstream.
To be more specific, Perl is in eighth place with a score of 4.303 percent. It's sandwiched between Python and JavaScript. Java, which is number one, has a score of 19.022 percent, while ActionScript (at number 20 and status "B") managed only 0.455 percent. So all in all, Perl's standing is pretty respectable.
The only problem is that Perl slipped a bit since January of 2008; it used
to be ranked seventh, and has lost 0.94 percent since then. And really,
Perl's ranking in the index
has gone down even more since it achieved some highs in 2004 and 2005.

But there's no point in dwelling on the negative. Also, in case you're either
curious or wish to dispute them, here's how the TIOBE index's rankings were
created.
TIOBE explains,
"The ratings are calculated by counting hits of the most popular search
engines. The search query that is used is +" programming" The search query
is executed for the regular Google, Google Blogs, MSN, Yahoo!, and YouTube
web search for the last 12 months. . . . The number of hits determine the
ratings of a language."
