Perl Bootcamp Saddles Up For Germany

By David A. Utter

The next Big Nerd Ranch session of Perl Bootcamp occurs in Germany in September, and will cover Intermediate Perl.

Once again, Learning Perl (4th ed.) and Intermediate Perl co-author brian d foy will lead the Perl Bootcamp for Big Nerd Ranch, the group recently announced. Big Nerd Ranch Europe spokesperson Stefanie H๖fling said the course would take place September 11-15, 2006, near Frankfurt, Germany.

Those who have mastered the Learning Perl book or just have a solid background in Perl should be prepared for the demands of the Perl Bootcamp. Foy has a lengthy reputation as an excellent instructor and coder, which will benefit attendees of the course.

"There are many gifted programmers in the world who are passionate about their subject areas. However, passion doesn't always translate into the ability to communicate information to fellow users in a classroom setting," said Aaron Hillegass, Big Nerd Ranch founder. However, Foy bridges that gap very effectively.

The Perl Bootcamp prepares its attendees to write useful, complex applications. The Ranch listed some of the capabilities its students should have at the end of the week-long course:

•  implement object- oriented concepts in Perl
•  use packages and namespaces
•  manage references and scoping
•  manipulate complex data structures
•  create reusable modules for individual use or for distribution
•  test and debug Perl code
•  contribute to CPAN

All of the Big Nerd Ranch learning takes place in a retreat-style setting. The course fee covers lodging, meals, training materials, lab access, and transportation to and from the Frankfort airport.

Perl Bootcamp has a place for those who tend to use Perl as part of their daily activities, like system administrators, as well as for dedicated Perl programmers. A well-written Perl script can handle complex, repetitive tasks and free an admin to make better use of the hours in the day.
